PackHacks: It's High Time to Score a New Swatch

PackHacks: It's High Time to Score a New Swatch

One thing that's made our pack list this time a watch - actually two. Neither of us typically wear one; i've actually only owned three in the last 20 years - the first, a high school graduation present from my parents that was stolen a few months into college; the second, a cheap, knock-off "Caspio" purchased in a market in Cambodia for $4 (it lasted just long enough for us to board our plane home two weeks later); the last, a new one bought just this weekend, especially for our upcoming trip.

WanderLand: Workshop Popup Tests New Menu at Union Minneapolis

WanderLand: Workshop Popup Tests New Menu at Union Minneapolis

It's chaos in downtown Minneapolis tonight. We've never been around pre-game, and would have chosen a different night had we known what traffic would look like. I cut the corner tight onto 8th Street, drop the car at valet and we dash in seven minutes late for our reservation. We're excited to be at Union in downtown Minneapolis for a special popup dinner called The Workshop, a menu-test for the new concept launching in this space come September.

PackHacks: Looking for Great Travel Binoculars

PackHacks: Looking for Great Travel Binoculars

So often on our adventures we find ourselves straining to see something off in the distance. Whether its the intricate details of a mural on a church ceiling or the wildlife outside our train window as we roll past, it seems like something is always just out of sight. Instead of squinting our way through Europe again, we have decided that its time to purchase a pair of binoculars.

PackHacks: Top Three Travel Backpacks for Substance, Style and Security

PackHacks: Top Three Travel Backpacks for Substance, Style and Security

My quest for product-perfection currently has me scrolling endless Pins, with a minimum of eleven tabs open at any time and my poor husband wondering if we will ever actually pull the trigger before we hit the road again this fall. I'm searching for a backpack. Not just any pack, but a wonder-pack - a travel-loving companion that is as ready to hit the streets as I am.

WanderLand: A Little Sip of Vietnam on Minneapolis's Eat Street

WanderLand: A Little Sip of Vietnam on Minneapolis's Eat Street

I can eat my weight in Vietnamese food. Bún Thit Nuong Cha Gio (rice noodle salad with grilled pork and fried spring roll) is one of my all time favorite dishes - anywhere, ever. It's on the shortlist of foods that, when I'm having a shitty/moody/apathetic day, can turn things on a dime, leaving me so full of rainbows you'd think it was me and not my darling husband that's the eternal optimist. It's that good.

PackHacks: Choosing the Right Shoes for Slow Travel with Limited Suitcase Space

PackHacks: Choosing the Right Shoes for Slow Travel with Limited Suitcase Space

This week's Pack Hack is about choosing the footwear that best suits your needs. Like our previous post on our favorite carry-on bag, shoes are a fundamental item for travel. Choosing the right shoes for your trip is absolutely essential. In our case, we were planning on being on the road for over three months, during the winter, while spending time at work exchanges in the country-side. It was important we had shoes that would be good for walking the cobblestone streets of an Italian hill town or working in the mud on a farm in France. Also, we were carrying only one small carry-on bag apiece so conserving space was very important. I brought 3 pairs with me and they worked perfectly for every situation we came across.

WanderLand: Minneapolis Area Pig Ate My Pizza is a Meal Worth the Drive

WanderLand: Minneapolis Area Pig Ate My Pizza is a Meal Worth the Drive

Our new weekly segment, Wander Land, will cover a local haunt from wherever we are at the moment. Right now we are in Minneapolis, MN and the spot is Pig Ate My Pizza. Located a few miles north of Minneapolis in the suburb of Robbinsdale, this pork-centric pizza and craft beer restaurant is easily one of our new favorite restaurants. With an open kitchen and chefs-turned-waiters on the floor, you really get a feel like you are a part of the madness going on all around you. Its a little loud and a bit warm but when the food starts coming to the communal table, all of that is forgotten.

Photo Story: The Incredibly Scenic Fort William, Mallaig & the West Highland Line

Photo Story: The Incredibly Scenic Fort William, Mallaig & the West Highland Line

We added our Scotland trip at the last minute, and it was truly one of the greatest highlights of the journey. From London, we took the train into Edinburgh, spent a few days, then hopped over to Glasgow on one of the many commuter trains that run daily between the two cities (photos of Edinburgh and Glasgow to follow). From Glasgow, we headed up to Fort William in the shadow of Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the British Isles), rode the West Highland Line to the end of the rail in Mallaig, came back down to Glasgow and ended our seven-day Scotland loop happily exhausted in London.

In Search of the Perfect Pint: Exploring the Germanfest MN Brews

In Search of the Perfect Pint: Exploring the Germanfest MN Brews

Under the old Schmidt Brewery buildings along the Mississippi River, polka music and the smell of sauerkraut carry on the breeze.  The sound of hammerschlagen, a game popular in Minnesota where the goal is to drive a nail into a piece of wood with one hammer strike, echoes through the crowd. Dachshund owners proudly wear their “I love Wieners” t-shirts in anticipation of the wiener dog races.  But this is a German heritage festival and that means one thing to me. Beer! Although the choices were fairly limited, I was able to try a couple beers I rather enjoyed.

Being Nowhere Native: Meet Joe Lucchese

Being Nowhere Native: Meet Joe Lucchese

When we launched Nowhere Native, it was never meant to be a travelogue, and certainly never meant to be only about us. Rather, we hoped it would be a platform to share experiences - both good and bad, ours and our friends - along life’s journey to become better, more fulfilled people and to stir in others a desire to explore a life outside of societal and self-imposed limitations. For us, this journey meant we would be walking away from the safety and stability of our former lives, stepping far outside our comfort zones and actively pursuing alternative ways to live lives of reward, passion, experience and togetherness. Like travel in foreign lands, choosing to live outside our conceived boundaries comes chock-full of uncomfortable situations. It’s in this discomfort we find the most interesting stories of risk and reward, and challenge and growth.

How to Make Friends While Traveling

How to Make Friends While Traveling

What we're learning, firsthand, is that taking a chance, putting yourself out there, being vulnerable and uncomfortable, toeing boundaries, letting down your guard and exploring the unknown makes way not just for new experiences in life, but for new connections that may not otherwise exist, opening the door to incredible people who can change your world in the first few moments you meet them and never, ever leave you - or your world - the same.

In Search of the Perfect Pint: Best UK Beers

We are not cicerones and are definitely not beer snobs, so some of these choices may not score very high on Beer Advocate and may have no medals from the World Beer Championships. We're happy drunks with a fondness for beer and for pairing it with the finest moments in life. If you have a personal favorite you think we should try, leave us a comment and we will be sure to give it a go - we're always happy to try a new brew.

Exploring the D-Day Sites in Normandy

Exploring the D-Day Sites in Normandy

Anyone who knows me knows I love history. It's what I like to watch; it's what I choose to read. I go through phases, immerse myself in a specific era and learn as much as possible about the subject before moving on to the next topic that captures my interest - Ancient Greece, Roman legions and emperors, The Civil War, World War One, Vietnam - the list goes on. The one subject I always go back to and can never learn enough about is WWII.
