Photo Story: The Incredibly Scenic Fort William, Mallaig & the West Highland Line

We added our Scotland trip at the last minute, and it was truly one of the greatest highlights of the journey. From London, we took the train into Edinburgh, spent a few days, then hopped over to Glasgow on one of the many commuter trains that run daily between the two cities (photos of Edinburgh and Glasgow to follow). From Glasgow, we headed up to Fort William in the shadow of Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the British Isles), rode the West Highland Line to the end of the rail in Mallaig, came back down to Glasgow and ended our seven-day Scotland loop happily exhausted in London.

The West Highland Line is oft referred to as the most scenic line in the world, and we often caught ourselves gasping for breath and tearing up at the remarkable vistas in every direction. My eyes still glaze over thinking of how much beauty there is in that part of the world, and I can't wait to go back and explore so much more Scottish life, land and hospitality.
